I think I'm in love pt. 1 (review of Moonshine's s/t CD)
My good sir, Eric, of Torture Garden Picture Company so graciously sent me a free copy of his latest release, Moonshine-s/t CD. He'd given it a little plug earlier, "A female fronted Doom band," to which I hadn't given much thought. Somehow the idea of a female fronted Doom band seemed a bit like a premeditated hook. Ohh how wrong I was. During the first strums on Baby Elephant Stomp I was overtaken by a sense that greatness was ahead, though I remained skeptical.

(Apparently Moonshine's drummer is Ron Jeremy? What do you think?)

The album starts out with a good four minutes of southern style metal instrumentals, as we patiently await our the arrival of our delightful mistress. Mis belts out menacing mid-level shrieks until instruments fade and in a beautiful feminine voice she serenades us with-
And all I can pray for
is a feast of lead
through a duct taped mouth.
My teeth hang on by threads of hope.
But I'll continue
to breath in the thin air
and forget
to exhale
She then returns to those lines in her previously offered hostile voice, sort of as a reminder that she can still fuck you up. Track two, White Smoker, is the song that got me to push away my work, put on some headphones, and actively listen to the music. Out of 34 words, Moonshine manages to push the four and a half minute mark, repeating fracions of those two senentences a number of times until they are spat out as a whole. Each cycle through the poetics becomes increasingly urgent, displaying the wide range of Mis' vocal stylings. From high-pitched, blood-curdling shrieks of terror to low-end guttural growls, Mis covers a lot of ground. Track four, Thrice, features the combined vocal stylings of Mis and another vocalist. Once he wails through slow, drawn out cries of desperation-
Prove to me
Show to me
Mis joins him with her familiar shrieks in a resolution-
Bring me closer to life
Overall this is a solid album, travelling through a wide range of stylings that all tie themselves together as the Moonshine sound. Punks making metal have never sounded so sweet.
Recommended tracks: White Smoker, Thrice

As Wayne pines for Cassandra, so I await the day that Mis will greet me with open and loving arms. She will be mine, ohh yes, she will be mine.
